We are happy to have received close to 500 contribution submissions for Velo-city 2013 in Vienna. These submissions have reached us from 47 different countries, with Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and the United Kingdom taking the most prominent positions. We are also delighted that a significant amount of abstracts has originated from Central and South-Eastern Europe. The submissions were blind-reviewed by an international and interdisciplinary Reviewing Team consisting of 145 reviewers from 25 countries.
Because so many high-quality submissions have passed the reviewing process, we have done our best to maximise the capacities of the conference venue by making space for around 160 contributions in various conference formats. Unfortunately, we were not able to always consider the presentation format an abstract was submitted for. We want to thank all contributors for their flexibility and understanding, especially if we have had to amend their desired presentation format.
The draft program for Velo-city 2013 will be published by the end of February. It will feature all contributions accepted as well as a preliminary time schedule. Regarding the draft program, we are especially happy that about half of the plenary lectures will be delivered by women, which is exceptional.
Since the contributions have thus been selected, we can also present a few core themes for Velo-city 2013 (amongst many others):
- Cycling cultures – mass culture or subcultures?
- Good practice examples for cycling campaigns
- Cycling strategies in Central and Eastern Europe
- The bicycle in car-centric environments: Survival or nursing culture?
- The sound of cycling: visual and musical bicycle echoes
- Cycling policies and economy
- Good practice for designing bicycle infrastructure
- Creative solutions for bicycle parking
- Cycling and health impacts
- The electric bicycle: policies, strengths and threat
