Founder of “FREE-RANGE KIDS”, author and journalist
“America’s Worst Mom.” The New York City newspaper columnist-turned-reality TV show host got that title after letting her 9-year-old-son take the subway, alone. In response to the enormous media blowback, Lenore Skenazy founded the book and blog “Free-Range Kids,” which launched the anti-helicopter parenting movement. Her feisty belief that our kids are not in constant danger has landed her on talk shows from Dr. Phil to The View. She has lectured internationally, including talks at Microsoft Headquarters and the Sydney Opera House. She has written for everyone from The Wall Street Journal to Mad Magazine. And she’s a graduate of Yale.A great believer in the power of big (and funny) ideas, she recently launched an 8-week, $350 after-school class called “I Won’t Supervise Your Kids.” That got LOTS of attention. Meanwhile, the holiday she invented, “Take Our Children to the Park…and Leave Them There Day” is now celebrated on three continents. On her Discovery/TLC reality show, “World’s Worst Mom”(“Bubble Wrap Kids” in Canada) Lenore is like the Supernanny. Except instead of dealing with obnoxious kids, she deals with overprotective parents who won’t let their school-age children do things like play outside or ride their bikes.Lenore pries these kids away and has them do “old-fashioned” kid things, like run a lemonade stand. Once the parents see how independent and happy their “babies” can be, their fear melts away. The change is lasting — and joyous. It’s a change Lenore is bringing to a world.
