Meshroom

A project from KGP design studio:
Meshroom turns the concept of prison-esque bike security solutions on its head (pun intended) and offers a highly effective, affordable means of securing bikes in a range of conditions. With the structural efficiency and flexibility of a tent and openness and resilience of a metal mesh fabric, the Meshroom offers a simple solution to a complex range of issues.

Essentially every urban area across the US has determined that bicycles are an essential part of the solution to help wean the county off its car dependency and to expand the pedestrian culture of our cities. One half billion dollars is lost annually to bicycle theft but the real impact is on discouraged potential riders due to the absence of secure parking in urban areas. Meshroom turns the concept of prison-esque bike security solutions on its head (pun intended) and offers a highly effective, affordable means of securing bikes in a range of conditions. With the structural efficiency and flexibility of a tent and openness and resilience of a metal mesh fabric, the Meshroom offers a simple solution to a complex range of issues. By partnering with bicycle manufacturers to print advertisements on the PVC membrane we are able to encourage the growth of bicycle culture while bringing implementation costs to cities and municipalities on par or lower than its rigid competitors.



– The elliptical plan allows for a radial loading arrangement which economizes by using a compact central loading area rather than the typical linear layout.



– The resulting footprint allows for fluid pedestrian movement at the exterior more easily integrated in plaza or sidewalk setting.



– The structurally efficient tensile mesh fabric supported by a compression ring replaces a complex rigid frame and panelized enclosure system typically used.



– The resilient cable mesh system (engineered for containing rock slides) is quickly and easily deployed in public spaces with little to no site preparation and able to withstand the most extreme security threats. Because it also operates it tension it structurally re-enforces the anticlastic PVC membrane under heavy snow load minimizing the amount of structure required for installation, and driving cost down with its integrated structural system.



– The 95% transparent galvanized mesh side panels – open to natural ventilation and upper panels of layered mesh and PVC membrane for weather resistance will ensure visibility and comfort to users. At night the Meshroom’s up lit PVC membrane will be an inviting and iconic urban landmark and reminder to go by bike!!
