Cycling Visionaries Awards – Project Details

Recicleta is an NGO conformed by a group of friends that recycles unused bicycles donated by people in Santiago, and give those bikes to people that can’t afford one.

In Chile, according to official data from last census, we have millions of bikes in almost every single home. Sadly, most of this bikes are unused.

Recicleta combines recycling and bike promotion, in three different activities that we’ve developing during the last three years.

First we have donations, where someone give us a bike and we recycle it and give it to a new owner that normally can’t afford one.

Also we have reparations journeys, where we visit a community (ghettos, foundations, special schools, orphanage, and others NGO) and repair the bicycles they have, and also bring them some bicycles we have.

Finally, we’ve been developing basic bike mechanic courses. These have proven very useful for people, and also helpful so bicycling don’t get so easily abandoned by people that get their bicycles disarranged.
