Doris Bures


Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology, Austria

Doris Bures was sworn in as Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology in 2008. From January 2007 to June 2008 she had been Federal Minister for Women, Media and the Civil Service. From 2000 to the beginning of January 2007 and from June to the beginning of 2008 she was national party manager of the SPÖ (Social Democratic Party of Austria). She was a Member of the National Council, the lower house of Austria’s parliament, acting as her party’s spokesman on housing and chairing the Buildings Committee. From 1997 to 2007 Doris Bures was also president of the Tenants’ Association of Austria.

Born in Vienna on 3 August 1962, Doris Bures completed her secondary education and studied at business school before training as a dental nurse. In 1980 she moved to a position in the national secretariat of the Austrian Socialist Youth Movement. From 1985 to 1986 she headed a project for unemployed young people.

During the period 1987 to 1990 Doris Bures worked in the Vienna Municipal Youth Department (1987 to 1988) and as a district councillor in her home district of Vienna-Liesing, where she has been deputy chairperson of her local party branch since 1995. Doris Bures has a grown-up daughter.
